“He brings that passion. He brings that energy each and every day. He’s one of our best communicators on defense along with [Kyle Dugger]. I feel very good about that safety room.”

Peppers, 28, is in his third season with the Patriots and has emerged as a key piece of the defense. His hard-hitting style meshes nicely with Dugger and the rest of the secondary.

Peppers is one of several members of the roster to receive a new deal, a group that includes offensive lineman Mike Onwenu, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, tight end Hunter Henry, defensive lineman Christian Barmore, and linebacker Joshua Uche.

Two players who have been left out who are also going into the final year of their contracts are linebacker Matthew Judon and defensive lineman Davon Godchaux. After Wednesday’s practice, Judon sounded disenchanted.
“Honestly, it’s tough going into the last year of the deal,” Judon said. “You kind of look at everybody around the league, in the building, getting deals done and worked out. And it’s tough to not be jealous or envious or something like that.”
And Friday, hours after news of Peppers’s deal broke, Godchaux expressed the same sentiments.
“It’s frustrating, but I’m going to give it to my agent,” Godchaux said. “I’m going to let Drew [Rosenhaus] handle it . . . I’m just going to roll with it. I’m just going to control what I can control.

“It’s frustrating playing out here with no guaranteed money, but I’m going to put it in Drew’s hands. I’m going to do what’s best for me.”

Godchaux, 29, has been a steadying presence in the middle of the defensive line the last three seasons, starting 50 of a possible 51 games and serving as one of the better run stoppers in the league. He isn’t the only reason the Patriots allowed just 3.3 yards per carry last year (best in the NFL), but it certainly isn’t coincidental.
“I consider myself one of the most dominant run players in the league,” said the 6-foot-3-inch, 330-pounder. “It’s a passing league, and a lot of guys get paid the big money when it comes to the pass rush, which I respect.
“But at the end of the day, I feel like you have to be able to stop the run to get to the pass rush. And I think that’s what a lot of people overlook.
“I’ve been consistent playing the run over my eight years in the league and I feel like I’m still in my prime, so I feel like I want to be rewarded also.”
Godchaux pointed specifically to the deals for defensive tackle Grover Stewart with the Colts (three years, $39 million) and Dalvin Tomlinson with the Browns (four years, $57 million) as potential models.
“I look at a guy like Grover Stewart, I look at a guy like Dalvin Tomlinson . . . all those guys are run [defenders],” Godchaux said. “The run market has went up too, not just the pass-rusher market.
“Grover Stewart don’t play third downs. Dalvin Thompson don’t play third downs, and all those guys are paid in their price range. So, I’m not going to call out a number, but those guys are paid in their price range.

“I just really want some respect, and I have no doubt that the Patriots and Drew will get a deal done.”
Asked about Judon’s comments, Mayo said, “We’re still kind of working through that stuff. Judon is a huge piece of the puzzle. He’s another guy who brings leadership. He brings obviously the playmaking ability. But also just that energy of wanting to go out there and dominate the man across from him.
“So hopefully we get something done. He understands the business side of it as well. He understands that we really like him. We really like him as a player and a person and we want him here.”
A long story
Rookie quarterback Joe Milton III connected with Javon Baker on a throw that went for roughly 60 yards, one of the most impressive connections of camp. “It was a little corner post,” Milton said. “I haven’t thrown something like that since the combine. It feels pretty good to do.” Rookie Marcellas Dial was in coverage . . . Cornerback Shaun Wade, who was limited over the first two days, practiced in a red noncontact jersey . . . Meanwhile, safety Marte Mapu and Barmore were late arrivals to practice, and while they had their helmets, they could best be classified as limited . . . The Patriots released rookie free agent cornerback Kaleb Ford-Dement. The 24-year-old was signed May 10 out of Texas State . . . The Patriots have Saturday off but are set to return to action Sunday.
